A busy old month with the gigs coming thick and fast.

ILIKETRAINS and SPOKES kicked things off nicely –GALLOWS managed to translate all the hate and bile form their ‘Grey Britain’ album into their live performance really well. FIGHTSTAR shows seem to come by on pretty regular basis- this was another good one though not at their best by any means – support bands IN CASE OF FIRE and LARUSO stole the show for me.

The CRS’s annual 2 day ‘ROTHERHAM ROCKS’ bash was up next. Only day one looked interesting to my tastes and was unusually ‘metal’ for them! BECKONSALE and CRIMES OF PASSION put in good, hard rocking sets before old Proggers HAZE changed the style of the evening completely with an hour of really nice retro-Prog. Headliners THRESHOLD played an absolute blinder- this line up seems to have gelled together really well now and Damian Wilson looks to be enjoying his second stint with them more every time I see them. The only downer on the night was the really poor turnout. This event used to pack the old CRS base at Rotherham, tonight there were only just over 100 people in the building..for this line up –for Theshold alone - that is nothing short of criminal.

Back over the hills to Yorkshire for a night with two of my new favourites, ASIWYFA and MAYBESHEWILL, who were on a joint headlining tour. I was a little surprised with Maybeshewill when I saw no keyboard on stage- their music has tons of it, but it seems they sample it all –always feel a bit cheated when that happens, but they were still a good watch. As for ASIWYFA, I could watch them play every night and never get bored. Sound wasn’t the greatest tonight but they put their usual energetic stint in- one of the guitarists decided hanging off the air conditioning ducts while continuing to play would be a good idea…..and it was!!

With so many great gigs already this year, I suppose it had to happen…I was in two minds about going to see STRATOVARIUS.. Eighteen quid to see them was a bit of joke, but with the excellent FIREWIND in support, along with EDEN'S CURSE who sounded good on disc, I figured it was worth it. To start with, the doors opened over an hour late- rumours were flying up and down the queue that it was about to be cancelled but eventually we filed in and Eden’s Curse were already playing ..well, they were on stage, but what was coming out of the PA was just overloaded feedback. Now we know why this was close to being cancelled!! The PA was just abysmal. Firewind actually managed to get it to an almost listenable state but it went completely for Stratovarius who sounded awful. Although none of it was down to their performance, people were streaming out of the building way before the end. Immediately afterwards, the venue cancelled all live shows ‘until further notice’ – shame they didn’t do that a day earlier.

I’d been hearing rave reviews of DANANANANAYKROYD’s live shows so popped over to Preston to take a look- not bad at all, very energetic edgy stuff, and ‘The Wall Of Hugs’ where both vocalists go into the crowd and hug every single person is different –though it does tend to leave you bathing in their sweat! Good to catch up with ELOHYMN too who were playing some really good sounding new material- great band who deserve much wider recognition.

DEMON have been a favourite of mine since their debut came out way back in the days of NWOBHM (anyone under 30, ask your Dad, he’ll tell you about it!) but I’d only ever seen them once before so when they announced a date just a few miles away at a cracking little venue, I couldn’t believe it. They crammed their set full of their 80’s classics with a few new ones sprinkled in too. Midway through the night ‘Madman’ vocalist Dave Hill nearly busted his arm on the low hanging lighting rig!!

A busy old week was rounded out in the company of Scottish rockers LOGAN – I’d seen them a couple of times supporting Alter Bridge and had been well impressed. A pretty poor turn out for this one and even though they seem to lack a bit of stagecraft at times they played a decent-but way too short- headline set.

After seeing them play several support and festival shows, it was good to see IN CASE OF FIRE play a headline show on their nationwide tour in support of their (Excellent) ‘Align The Planets’ album. They played their nuts off even though there were only about 30 people in the room.

To end the month, Preston’s Mad Ferret was hosting a Bank Holiday ‘All Dayer’. MOUNTAINS BECAME MACHINES opened it with an epic set of post metal goodness and ASIWYFA closed it with their customary set of excellence, even if 90% of the crowd was too drunk to appreciate it! In between there was some distinctly average stuff, though I did enjoy CHAOTIX and EXIT STATE and PENCIL IN.

GIGGING IN 2009 - APRIL

APRIL

5th - PEOPLE IN PLANES/Virgin Marys/Prego - Roadhouse, Manchester
11th - AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR/Connecting Flight/Minion TV/The Whip Hand/We Came Out Like Tigers- Barfly, Liverpool
16th - ..TRAIL OF DEAD/So-So Glows/Middle Class Rut - Academy 3, Manchester
23rd - GRAMMATICS/Spokes/Bikini Black Special/Chaotix – Mad Ferrit, Preston
24th & 25th HAMMERFEST - Pontins, Prestatyn
24th - OPETH/13th Sign/Architects/Firebrand Superrock/Hammerfall/Imicus/Kiuas/Paradise Lost/Power Quest/Tesseract/The Defiled
25th - SEPULTURA/Alestorm/Dream Evil/Exit Ten/Hollow Earth Theory/Sacred Mother Tongue/Skindred/Sylosis/Tyr/Voodoo 6

30th - ALESTORM/TYR/Skull Branded Pirates - Rio's, Leeds

Having enjoyed PEOPLE IN PLANES a few days earlier when they supported Funeral For A Friend, I took the opportunity to catch them doing a headline slot- a really talented band with some really great songs to match. The big bonus of the evening came in the shape of VIRGIN MARYS - no airs, no graces- no trying to suit a particular genre, they just plain, flat out rocked.
With their their new album stuck on heavy rotation on my hi-fi, I finally got the chance to catch Irish 'almost instrumentalists' ASIWYFA doing a headline show in nearby Liverpool. They sound so good on disc, surely they can't be as good live can they?....I was right... they are better!! Watching these four lads charge around the stage ripping out monster riffs and bending time signatures to the point of breaking is just mind blowing-something tells me I'll be seeing A LOT more of these guys.
A band I'd always meant to check out was AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD but had never got around to it until recently as their new album fought with ASIWYFA for playing time. Late decision to check them out live left me impressed, though had I been more familiar with their material I'm sure I'd have enjoyed the 'wall of noise' even more. Support band MIDDLE CLASS RUT were very impressive- just two guys making the noise of about eight!
I really enjoyed seeing GRAMMATICS set at Bonefest last year, so the chance to see them and another local favourite band of mine SPOKES at the fantastic Mad Ferret venue in Preston was too much to pass up. Both bands put in fine performances- Spokes auditioned some new songs which sounded good while Grammatics have that air of a band for whom fame and fortune could be just around the corner
With the outdoor festival season just around the corner, we hit Pontin's holiday camp in Prestatyn (North Wales) for the inaugural 2 - day HAMMERFEST - with bands playing until the early hours on each day, this was going to be a marathon! Day one got off to a fine start with accomplished performances on the unsigned stage from IMICUS, TESSERACT and especially THE DEFILED. HAMMERFALL kicked off the main stage in fine style before ARCHITECTS blew the roof off the place. PARADISE LOST's doom laden music didn't seem to work quite so well, and headliners OPETH suffered a similar fate as swathes of the crowd headed away to the second stage - though the choice of material might have been to blame for that- good, but probably the least effective gig I've ever seen them play. POWER QUEST were fun to watch for half an hour-trouble was, they played for twice that! They are a decent band but there is 'something' that stops me really liking them. By now I was ready to head off to my *luxury chalet for a good night's kip, but wanted to watch KIUAS so sucked it up- glad I did because they put on probably the set off the day that seemed to re-awaken those still standing.
Day2 dawned dull but soon brightened up to be an unseasonably warm affair- the outdoor Jager stage drawing good crowds for acoustic sets from both Skindred and Exit Ten with additional entertainment from one young chap who's projectile vomiting after drinking a truly lethal combination drew huge cheers from everyone who saw it!!
Back inside, HOLLOW EARTH THEORY put in a good shift in mid afternoon as did TYR, though we had to cut out mid set to catch the full main stage set from EXIT TEN- these five young lads from Reading looked so at ease on the massive stage and despite the fact that the popular Tyr and then ALESTORM were on the second stage at the same time, they still drew a decent crowd. A quick dash over to catch the second half of Alestorm was needed and worthwhile - A huge crowd were packed into the second arena (Which was now beginning to stink of ripe feet!) and the place was rocking with all manner of piratey equipment being waved in the air.
Back over on the main stage Benji got the entire crowd bouncing throughout SKINDRED's hour long set- is there a better front-man out there today? I seriously doubt it! Never was much of a SEPULTURA fan but decided to give them a listen- sorry, but I still don't get them. Sounded like the same song played over and over..and over again to me. It was getting late by now but the wonderful SYLOSIS woke me up before the uber-cheese metal of DREAM EVIL finished me off (Cheese which I happen to like a great deal, BTW!) - closing with 'The Book Of Heavy Metal' was just genius - I slept like a log in our *luxury chalet once more before heading home the following morning having had a whale of a time and looking forward to the summer festival season even more.
Having missed part of their sets at Hammerfest, it was good fortune that both TYR and ALESTORM were touring together. Rio's in Leeds is fast becoming my favourite medium sized venue- as ever both bands had great sound and both played great sets. Special mention must go to openers SKULL BRANDED PIRATES- not only were they way better than when they supported Alestorm, they had the crowd in hysterics during 'Salty Jim- The Lobster King' when someone dressed in a pink jumpsuit complete with claws and matching motorcycle helmet with antennae on ran onto the stage and 'attacked' the guitarist... truly one of those 'Spinal Tap' moments!!

GIGGING IN 2009 - MARCH

MARCH

*******

4th – PROTEST THE HERO/The Human Abstract/The Arusha Accord/The Chariot – Rio’s, Leeds

7th – IT BITES/Plastic Gun Alliance – Academy 3, Manchester

8th – PURE REASON REVOLUTION/Palmstruck – MOHO, Manchester

13th – EXIT TEN/Forever Never/Ashes Of Illusions – Barfly, Liverpool

17th - ELOHYMN/This Is Not A Dead Transmission/Deceived- Roadhouse, Manchester

19th – GONE TIL WINTER/Awaker/Before Autumn Falls- The Music Box, Manchester

22nd – EXIT TEN/Forever Never/Appolyon/The Hollow Earth Theory- Central Station, Wrexham

24th – KAMELOT/Serenity/Toxic Federation- Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton

27th – FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND/We Are The Ocean/People In Planes – Rio’s, Leeds

28th – KAMELOT/Pantheon - Rio’s, Leeds

I’d been waiting to see PROTEST THE HERO since I got into them in late 2008, and boy was it worth the wait. Great set with perfect sound quality in front of a surprisingly huge crowd too. Enjoyed all three supports too. Since they returned to the scene in 2006, IT BITES have become something of a touring machine and they always get a good reaction from a Manchester crowd. Don’t think this was quite up there with last years shows but still very enjoyable. The following night saw PURE REASON REVOLUTION playing at a new (for me) venue in town called MOHO. I’d been really struggling to get anything at all out of their new album but they put on a fine show despite a dodgy sound system!

EXIT TEN were out on a headline tour this month – the Liverpool gig was excellent, though the sound at Wrexham was so bad, it was hardly worth being there. FOREVER NEVER were out with them promoting their new album and they are always a good watch.

A chance to catch up with Preston's favourite instru-mentalists ELOHYMN is always welcome and they were in good form at the Roadhouse tonight. Couple of other good bands tonight in the shape of headliners THE DECEIVED and the rather quirky THIS IS NOT A DEAD TRANSMISSION.

GONE TIL WINTER pulled a decent crowd into the stange little venue that is Manchester's Music Box. The occasion was the release of theirr first single. This cwas a really good performance too- a lot looser and more relaxed than when I last saw them.

KAMELOT were back in the UK for a run of shows and we managed to catch two of them At Wolverhampton they were pretty good, at Leeds they were absolutely stunning. Surprisingly, they seemed to revel in the smaller stage and ‘in your face’ audience. The only down part of the Leeds show was that support band SERENITY couldn’t play as the singer was ill- they were fantastic at Wolverhampton too. Instead we got the truly woeful PANTHEON.

GIGGING IN 2009 - FEBRUARY

FEBRUARY

5TH – CHIODOS/Exit Ten – Academy 3, Manchester
13th – FIGHTSTAR/Exit Ten – Rio’s, Leeds
20th – ALESTORM/The Red Shift/Skull Branded Pirates – Oliver’s Bar, Ashton
28th – ADEBISI SHANK/BLAKFISH/Pulled Apart By Horses – Royal Park Cellars, Leeds

A lot of the gigs I go to, my daughter comes along with me, and whenever EXIT TEN are in the area, we will always make a point of being there. They were the main support at the first two gigs of the month and turned in their usual, tight-as-a-nut performances. CHIODOS were a new one on me though, but we both came out of the show as fans – a really great hi-energy show and a fine front man in Craig Owens (Who was fired from the band later in the year). FIGHTSTAR have come on in leaps and bounds in recent times and the packed crowd at Rio’s were lapping it up.
The good ship ALESTORM decided to dock at Ashton again following last years successful night of pillagin’ n plunderin’. Fellow ‘Wolves Of The Sea’ SKULL BRANDED PIRATES opened proceedings with a piratey version of The Police’s ‘Message In A Bottle’ but overall, this one didn’t quite match last years show though.
There was a fine triple headed bill to finish the month off in the claustrophobic confines of Leeds’ Royal Park Cellars (It is, literally, the cellar of a pub!). PULLED APART BY HORSES fuzzed out heavy riffage got everyone warmed up but then BLAKFISH kind of let the air out of the room by playing a set almost exclusively full of songs from their just recorded new album that no one knew –good, but they maybe should have mixed it up a bit more. Not to worry Irish mentalists ADEBESI SHANK were on hand to round the night out in their own, very unique angular, guitar driven style.

GIGGING IN 2009 - JANUARY

10th - FROST*/Magenta – Montgomery Hall, Wath

15th – HOSPITAL OF DEATH/See Red - Grand Central, MAnchester

17th – ARCHITECTS/Mysery Signals/A Textbook Tragedy – Academy 3, MAnchester

21st – KING'S X/To-Mera/Haken – Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton

30th – GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT/Solus Locus/I Concur – Brudenell Social Club, Leeds

The gig year started off at the Classic Rock Society ‘BOTY’ (Best Of The Year) evening. MAGENTA kicked things off with a fine run through of their ‘Metamorphis’ album then after the awards ceremony-presented by Steve Hackett- FROST* played a decent if error strewn set-back to the rehersal room guys! The Grand Central might sound like a rather ‘Grand’ venue… it isn’t.. it’s a sweaty pub in central Manchester – not a place to be when you feel like crap to start with but. HOSPITAL OF DEATH managed to put a smile on my face as usual but I gave up on the rest of the night and headed home for my nice warm bed! Feeling better, a couple of days later I ventured out to catch rising Brit metallers ARCHITECTS play an intense, but altogether too short set – Canadian support bands A TEXTBOOK TRAGEDY and MISERY SIGNALS were both excellent as well but 40 minutes does not a headline set make.

Next up was a trip down the M6 to catch up with a long lost favourite of mine – KING'S X. It’s been far too long since they played in the UK, but this show left me dumbstruck – they were truly awesome on the night – great setlist, perfect sound, and a crowd that was well into it too. Saw a mate on the way out and we both said the same thing ‘Will we see a better gig all year?’ ….you know, I don’t think we did…. Though GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT all but matched it a week or so later. The Brudenell in Leeds was packed to bursting for this one after their epic performance at the same venue a year earlier. If anything this was even better – sound was spot on and the projections were much clearer and really added to the overall effect.
